Is there something that signals spring for you each year? Maybe it is the start of spring training for baseball, seeing a certain flower bloom, or in Arizona, our first 90 degree day. When I lived in Chicago it was always the first time I smelled a freshly cut lawn. I have a new indicator for the beginning of spring. The first time I can go to the store and get a fresh watermelon. About a week ago I went into the grocery store and there they were; watermelons were back. I couldn’t help myself, I had to grab one. The great part is I wasn’t disappointed when I cut into it. The inside was bright red and it was sweet tasting. At that time I knew spring was here.
Spring is a great time of year because there is a newness or freshness about it. Everything just seems a little better in the spring, except maybe the students’ ability to concentrate in school. It also got me to thinking about how God makes things new and fresh. We all go through different seasons in our lives. When He brings us into a time of new growth, and gives a fresh perspective, it feels a little like that perfect spring day. The great thing about God is it doesn’t have to happen in March or April and it isn’t limited to one time during the calendar year. 1 Corinthians 5:17 tells us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone and the new has come!” In Christ we are made new like spring. So next time you have a sweet tasting watermelon or smell a freshly cut lawn, think of spring and how God makes us a new creation in Christ.
