In my life as an administrator I have the opportunity to meet a lot of very intelligent people. When I have the chance to go to a conference or a meeting with people from outside our school, I am always looking for people who can offer insight into education to help us improve as a school.
I think the same applies to my personal life. When I am around really good people I feel like I have the opportunity to grow as a person. That could show itself in the way we treat others, in conversations with other people or the empathy shown to someone in need. It may be part of my psychology background, but I love to listen to others and observe people and their interactions.
Proverbs 27:17 tells us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” I find this to be so very true for myself. When I am around strong people in an area I become stronger or sharper. I feel extremely blessed to be in the Phoenix area where we have so many wonderful pastors. I have the opportunity to interact with many of them and I always walk away feeling encouraged to grow in my thinking and faith. I am also blessed by my family. My beautiful wife is always in God’s Word and she helps to keep me sharp. My children continue to grow in their faith as they step into new phases of adulthood and as they do they continue to challenge me to grow.
I pray you are around others who keep you sharp in your faith. If not, I encourage you to seek out those people. While the sharpening can be tough at times, the result is well worth the effort.
