This past Sunday there was a Bible reading at the church I attended about Jesus casting out a demon from a young boy. What struck me in this reading was what the father of the boy said to Jesus. Jesus asked the father if he believed Jesus could really help his son. The father replied, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief.” (Mark 9:24). What a profound statement. The father had faith but also knew he struggled with doubts.

How often does this happen in our lives? We have faith, but there is still the element of doubt. The doubt can creep in because of a number of factors. Sometimes it is our past failures that cause us to doubt. Other times people question what we believe so we lose confidence. Then there are situations that just seem too great to overcome. What is it that causes you doubt in your faith?

The reality is we all have these times of doubt, some of us more than others. When it happens I hope we can all say the same thing the father in this story did… Jesus, I believe, please take away my doubts. Trust can be a difficult thing. Don’t hesitate to call on Jesus to help strengthen your faith and take away those times of doubt.
